Winter Night Shelter
'I was a stranger and you invited me in'
Eastbourne churches work together to offer overnight shelter for homeless and thus vulnerable people, who would otherwise be sleeping rough on the streets of Eastbourne during the cold winter months. Holy Trinity joined the team in 2013/14 with 22 church members participating and manning shifts or providing food.
A total of 40 guests registered to use the 'Winter Night Service' between 1 December 2013 and 28 February 2014, most of whom have now found longer term accommodation and only 6 remained homeless at the close of this year's service.
For your interest and information - Guests go through a registration system of referral and assessment to ensure the safety of fellow guests and volunteers. With the aim is to provide a warm, safe and friendly environment between 7.00pm and 8.00am, including an evening meal, breakfast, games, DVDs and talking to the guests.
Holy Trinity is already planning its particiaption in 2014/15, with its first hosting being the night of 4th/5th December 2014. We will be working with the Salvation Army who will host on alternate Thursday/Fridays so dates for volunteers to book in their diaries are:- 4th/5th December, 18th/19th December, 1st/2nd January, 15th/16th January, 29th/30th January, 12th/13th February and 26th/27th February.
There are many opportunities to serve as a volunteer on one of the 3 shifts at Holy Trinity, or on other nights at our partner churches. And we very much appreciate the support given us in our first season by other church members, especially for the overnight shift.
